Cloth diapers can accumulate bacteria, limescale or soap residue over time, which can lead to odour problems. If you find that your diapers start to smell, especially when they get wet, it may be time for a thorough cleaning – often called “stripping”.

Why does the smell occur?

Accumulation of limescale from hard water

Soap residue from detergent

Inadequate washing where dirt and ammonia are not properly flushed out

Step-by-step guide to stripping posts

1. Prepare a tub of warm water

Fill a baby bathtub or a large tub with very hot water.

Add 1-2 dl baking soda depending on the number of posts.

2. Leave the inserts to soak

Soak all inserts in the solution overnight.

3. Wash at high temperature

After soaking, wash the pads at 90 degrees without diaper shells.

Avoid wetbags in this sink as they can prevent optimal water circulation.

4. Run an extra rinse

It is important to ensure that there is no residue of baking soda or dirt left.

5. Dry the diapers correctly

Air drying in sunlight is recommended, as the sun’s UV rays have a natural disinfecting effect.

Prevention of odor

Rinse pads from night diapers in cold water immediately after use to minimize ammonia buildup.

Avoid fabric softener as it reduces absorbency.

Adjust the dosage of detergent according to the hardness of the water to avoid soap residue.

Clean the washing machine regularly to prevent bacteria accumulation.

By following these steps, you will ensure that your modern cloth diapers remain fresh and odor-free while also extending their lifespan.
