Chemical treatments in period underwear
You might be surprised to learn that several brands treat their period underwear with substances such as nanosilver and biocides to make them odorless or antibacterial. But unfortunately, this is true.
Is it necessary?
Menstrual blood doesn’t actually smell much when absorbed into natural materials like bamboo. The smell many people associate with menstruation often occurs when the blood comes into contact with plastic or polyester – materials used in many disposable pads and some period underwear.
What happens in contact with the mucous membranes?
At Elskbar , I will never treat our period underwear with nanosilver, biocides, or other chemical substances to make them “odorless.” Firstly, it is not necessary at all. And secondly, I am deeply concerned about what can happen when the sensitive mucous membranes of the vagina come into contact with these substances. We do not yet know enough about what the consequences may be in the long term. but the Consumer Council TÆNK has tested some period underwear and found environmentally harmful chemicals. They do not recommend using period underwear with biocides. Read the article about nanosilver found in other brand
Natural materials
At Elskbar we are aware that period underwear must be a healthy and safe solution. Therefore, I have chosen to use natural materials as bamboo and TENCEL™, which are naturally antibacterial and gentle on the skin. These materials have the amazing property of absorbing blood without creating odour nuisances – completely without the use of chemical treatments.
Tested free of PFAS
In addition, there are certain brands where products contain PFAS – fabrics that are not used to avoid odours, but are used to make textiles water-repellent. PFAS are known as “forever chemicals” because they break down very slowly and can accumulate in the environment and body.
Elskbar period underwear are tested by a third party for many different PFAS substances and is guaranteed to be free of them. So you can safely use period underwear without worrying about PFAS.
My experience during the design phase
During the design phase for Elskbar period underwear , I tried many different brands of period underwear. While some of them were comfortable to wear, I was often disappointed when I read the fine print: They were treated with nanosilver or other chemicals. It was an eye-opener for me. Many people choose period underwear to avoid plastic and chemicals, but unfortunately this is not always what you get.
That’s why I designed Elskbar period underwear with a focus on natural materials, aesthetics and safety. I wanted to create a product that gave women a safe and natural experience without hidden worries.
How do you choose safely?
As a consumer, it is important to be attentive and investigative. Here are my tips for finding safe period underwear:
Read the label carefully: Check if the underwear are free of nanosilver, biocides and PFAS.
Avoid polyester: Polyester can create odor and irritation, especially when used in the absorbent layer.
Choose natural materials: Materials like bamboo and TENCEL™ are great alternatives to synthetics.
Ask the manufacturer: If you are unsure about a product, ask directly how it is made and processed.
Why Elskbar is different
Elskbar period underwear are unique because they combine natural materials with a well-thought-out design:
White inside: Allows you to keep an eye on your flow and understand your body better.
Beautiful colours: Inspired by nature.
Natural materials: Bamboo and TENCEL™ that take care of both you and the environment.
Make a conscious choice
My hope is that you as a consumer will be inspired to investigate what your period underwear contain. I know that we all want the best for our bodies and planet, and with conscious choices, we can ensure that we get products that truly live up to those values.
Thank you for taking care of yourself – and choosing wisely.
Love
Louise
